Walter Steiger

The funny thing about the new Walter Steiger ‘atelier’ is that nobody seems to know how much anything actually costs. After all, why bother asking asking the price of a made-to-measure boot in astrakhan, shaved mink, and blond fox? ‘It’s terribly cruel, astrakhan’, the designer Lutz told me with a shudder, ‘do you know where it comes from?’ I did but with a mouth full of veal and a calfskin cardholder – a gift from our host – in my pocket I didn’t feel like approaching the subject. Steiger, who made his début with Mary Quant and has designed for Lagerfeld, Alaïa, and Ungaro, is one of those confidential legends whose work has figured prominently in cinema (Antonioni hand-picked him to design the shoes for Blow Up for example) and the fashion press without generating any mass-market name recognition, which is probably just as he likes it. This new Parisian space (he already has 2 boutiques here) is dedicated to his made to measure activity.
