In the wake of the exhibitions Gakona and Spy Numbers, the Palais de Tokyo’s new group show is again thick with intrigue, with 18 artists whose works also read as instruction manuals on how to withdraw into seclusion and take refuge in the limits of the visible. Painter Paul Laffoley deals with occultism, paganism and Catholicism all at once in his densely detailed canvases, whilst Ryan Gander gives us a glimpse of another world with his spooky installation ‘Nathaniel Knows’, which consists of a darkened room with an intriguing hole in the wall. The exhibition explores the notion of seclusion and social anarchy – Tony Matelli burns 500 euro notes while Robert Kusmirowski reconstructs the Unabomber’s secluded cabin – and questions both the restraints of society and a subsequent withdrawal from the world.
