Sombras electricas, the literal translation of the Chinese word for ‘cinema’ into Spanish, is a fitting title for this major Swiss artist’s solo show. Using installation, photography and video, Defraoui manipulates images that play on memory and expectations. Resonances et courant d’air, the film that pervades the main exhibition space, meanders enigmatically through empty rooms of a house. The house is empty but the rooms, furniture and objects are pregnant with untold stories. Another film, Aphrodite Ping Pong, juxtaposes image and sound; the sound of a bustling street fills the space while geometric objects appear in the sky. The objects fall and at the moment of impact with the ground, the film falls silent. As for much of the exhibition, the counter intuition is compelling. (Until 13th Dec)
