French videaste Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster has been active on the New York art scene since 2008. After participating in a group exhibition ‘theanyspacewhatever’ at the Guggenheim last year, she’s now presenting her first major solo show in the US – Chronotopes & Dioramas – at the Hispanic Society of America (until 18 April 2010). Commissioned by the internationally renowned NY Dia Art Foundation, this project creates an annex to the Society’s library with three ‘dioramas’ inspired by the Americas, their geography, climate and contemporary literature. The scenes have been modeled according to traditional techniques of museum display, however they depict contemplative and ruined landscapes, almost like science-fiction; the artist likes to explore the boundary between reality and fiction. In Paris, you can experience, in a more commercial context, Gonzalez-Foerster’s world at the Balenciaga store (10 avenue George V, 75008), designed in collaboration with Nicolas Ghesquière.
