Cannes Film Festival opens today

The Cannes Film Festival opens tonight with Hollywood blockbuster Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe. Another out-of-competition Hollywood premiere is Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, starring Shia LaBeouf and Michael Douglas. Jury president Tim Burton is presiding over films in competition including new works from Mike Leigh, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Takeshi Kitano and Alejandro González Iñárritu, with perhaps the most mainstream offering from Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) Fair Game, starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. Other notable films screening out of competition include Woody Allen’s latest, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, starring Naomi Watts, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas and Josh Brolin, and Tamara Drewe from Stephen Frears (The Queen) based on a graphic novel by Posy Simmonds… Everyone’s now just crossing their fingers that renewed activity in Iceland‘s Eyjafjallajokull volcano doesn’t get in the way of proceedings.
Until 23 May.
