Herman Dune & Petit Bateau

After launching their line for grown-ups in 2009 around a campaign with cool US pop group MGMT, Petit Bateau launch a new musical collaboration with the French neo-folk group Herman Dune. The group has designed an exclusive collection for the brand, based around their latest album Strange Moosic and its iconic blue yeti, which will be on sale from Tue 28 Feb. There’s also a special new track ‘I’ll Be Blue’ for the campaign and included on a deluxe edition of the album. Not the band’s first foray into fashion, last year Herman Dune designed a pair of chinos for Paris rock label April 77.
PS The band will perform live next Sat 3 Mar in Petit Bateau’s Champs-Elysées shop.

Rough Trade in Paris

The emblematic London record label returns to Paris this December with its winter collection. The pop-up store Rough Trade Shops On Tour will be open for one week only, chez agnès b., and will focus on the best albums of 2011, Rough Trade’s Album of The Year and a typical Rough Trade edit of only the very best new music on vinyl and CD, plus an eclectic selection of Christmas gifts and stocking fillers. The space will also host live performances and signing sessions with something going on every day; some confirmed highlights are Josh T Pearson (Mon 12), Jarvis Cocker presents his book of lyrics “Mother, Brother Lover” (Wed 14), and an Ed Banger Afternoon Tea & Music with Busy P and Feadz (Fri 16).

12Mail gallery welcomes Swiss graphic design collective //DIY who present FM, an experimental exhibition about the transcription and parallels between sound and image. Their cerebral, sober style has already been at the service of brands including Apple, Channel 4, Colette, EtniesPlus, Fairtilizer, Flammarion, Nike, Playstation & Sneaker Freaker… And in 2009, as well as looking after the album’s cover art, they directed the video French See The Sea (red) French for electro music dude Vitalic (see below). In 2001, DIY launched +41 a catch-all publisher for all-sorts of great side projects across photography, music, video and fashion design.

Tickets remain for this concert/ homage to Tom Waits’ 1985 album Rain Dogs. A hefty co-production between Les Nuits de Fourvière, Montreux Jazz Festival, London’s Barbican Centre and the Salle Pleyel, the show brings together a stellar cast of singers and musicians - Arthur H, The Tiger Lillies, Stef Kamil Carlens, Camille O’Sullivan, St Vincent, Erika Stucky, and Jane Birkin – to revisit the legendary album. In a very personal evocation of the New York slums, the album’s nineteen tracks impress with their variety, borrowing from cabaret, polka, jazz, rock and even spoken poetry. The concert will go back through the album – integrally, though quite freely.

Les Nuits Capitales Festival

Opening tomorrow and running all week is this festival aimed at rejunvenating and supporting Parisian nightlife culture, its venues, its artists, and its audience (that means you). ‘Dawn of Innocence’ a musical by JC de Castelbajac & Nouvelle Vague

After touring the US with the OohLaLa festival last month, this musical directed by our very own Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and starring Nouvelle Vague – the French concept band that conquered the world with bossa nova covers of punk and new wave classics – hits Paris for the opening night of the Les Nuits Capitales festival at the 104 next Mon 14. ‘Dawn of Innocence’ follows on from ‘Ceremony’, the previous Castelbajac/ Nouvelle Vague collab created for the Exit Festival earlier this year. In the words of JC: ‘I used Nouvelle Vague as a time machine to take me back to the pop colors and the darker tones of the ’80s, a decade that was both glamorous and somber at the same time”. Silencio ‘Carte Blanche’ by David Lynch

New super club Silencio launches its ‘Carte Blanche’ cultural program tonight with the club’s star patron David Lynch. He’ll be exhibiting a series of photos of the new club. He’s invited Barista World Champ Troels Poulsen to make the coffee. You’ll get to sample wines from the Estate Lynch Bages (…no relation). Lynch has also curated a selection of books for the reading room, including Dostoevsky’s ‘Crime & Punishment’, Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’, ‘The Art Spirit’ by Robert Henri, ‘Name Above the Title’ by Frank Capra… Plus he’s had a hand in the musical programme with, tonight, The Kills; Sat 22, Au Revoir Simone; Sun 23, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis; Mon 24, Gary Clark Jr; Wed 27, Lykke Li; and on Tue 26 David Lynch will give an exclusive preview of his new electro album ‘Crazy Clown Time’, out on 7 Nov! Joey Starr hangouts for Gogo

The charismatic French rapper from the generation-defining group NTM spent the 90s giving a voice to France’s disenfranchised suburbs/ ghettos. Joey Starr might now be in his 40s, but he continues not only to play out the role of France’s favourite bad boy, but also to create. His second solo album Egomaniac is out at the end of the month, and he also has a starring role in Maïwenn’s new film Polisse, released on Wednesday, and which won the Jury Prize at Cannes this year. For a previous edition of the Gogo Guide to Paris, Mr Starr let us on a couple of his favourite spots in Paris, and we thought it was timely to drag them out of the archives and share them with you:
“I like to cook and I like to eat and I particularly love the cuisine from southwestern France. Les Papilles (30 rue Gay Lussac, 5th. www.lespapillesparis.fr) is an amazing bistro, and Yves Camdebord’s Le Comptoir du Rélais (9 carrefour de l’Odéon, 6th) is very, very tasty too.”
“Most of the time I prefer to hang out at my place at night, where I have a real zinc bar, but I do go out from time to time. I like to drink, and I like drinking rum.
