MARIA LUISA

Venezuelan Maria Luisa Poumaillou was one of Paris' first stockists of Galliano, McQueen and the Belgians, and has an eye for rising stars. Her new space regroups all women's wear and accessories - previously scattered over 3 spaces on the rue Cambon and rue du Mont-Thabor. The new modern space is clean in mostly white and gray, save for splashes of red, blue and yellow towards the rear of the store. Staple labels from Azzedine Alaïa to Balenciaga create a unique mix alongside young designers including Rick Owens and Christopher Kane. Manolo Blahnik is just one of the exclusives found in store. If you can't pony up for these designer threads, there's plenty to gawk at from the six impressive windows currently showing Autumn's penchant for LBDs. And keep in mind that menswear is just across the road too (38 de la rue du Mont Thabor). MM

RICHARD AVEDON RETROSPECTIVE

From his extraordinary photojournalistic documentation of American civil rights campaigners in the 1960s to his conceptual transformation of Parisian fashion houses in the 1980s, it is no understatement to describe the career of Richard Avedon as epic. This retrospective exhibition, organised by the Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation, surveys the fascinating career of this captivating photographer from his debuts in 1946 un until his death in 2004. The exhibit compiles some of Avedon's most celebrated work, including collections recording the Vietnam War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and a series dedicated to his dying father. Perhaps most poignant is his sequence of 700 portraits of lower and middle-class families in the western United States - an emotional intense and wholly profound mediation on the mythology of the American West. TM

CARLOS MIELE

This exuberant Brazilian fashion designer, who has been turning heads at New York fashion week for years, recently landed on the rue St-Honoré. The gowns are at once buoyant and beautiful in a uniquely Brazilian way. Keep in mind that Miele is part of an emerging breed of designers known for their commitment to social issues. By working with artisanal cooperatives in São Paulo’s favelas, he has helped bring employment to entire communities of poor women while creating designs with elegant handworked details. His sexy designs are notable for their elaborate pleating, crochets, clingy silhouettes and low-slung backs. MD

PORCELAIN BY STUDIO JOB

Each year Holland’s ancient ceramics company, the Royal Tichelaar Makkum, collaborates on a series with a contemporary designer. After collections by Marcel Wanders and JongeriusLab, for 2007 the prestigious potters have teamed up with the young Flemish design duo Studio Job. Produced in biscuit porcelain, the minimal white of the pieces – plates, vase, lantern, candleholder, box, cake dish – belies a glut of clues, coded jokes and hidden signs in relief on the porcelain. The gorgeous collection is exclusively available at the Eclaireur.

CHANEL

Everything in life is better when you’re dressed in Chanel. The thin and fabulous continue to flock to the monochrome boutiques for iconic reworked tweeds, gilt accessories and quilted bags. Vertiginous heels are a must, and skinny-skinny is definitely the order of the day. Karl Lagerfeld keeps coming up trumps for the more Paris-than-Paris brand. Find perfume, killer evening wear, all the hot accessories, the full range of sunglasses and a seriously monied Middle-Eastern clientele at the Avenue Montaigne boutique; Rue Cambon has more of an intimate Coco Chanel feel to it. The mean streets are but a distant memory...
