An upbeat new show from local talent Thomas Lélu ‘It Could be Worse’ brings together two beautiful, almost intimate series of cut-out postcards and over-painted nudes and reveals that eventually Lélu is a drawer, and the Lucky Luke type: drawing faster than his shadow. The show is on in new Paris gallery Vincenz Sala, a young gallery with a long history. Starting off in the mid-80s in Berlin, it moved to Brussels in the late 90s, and after a long sabbatical, has recently reopened with 2 spaces in Berlin and Paris. Its program migrates between young upcoming artists, working across all media, and established, mostly sculptural, positions it has been following for years.

In Love with Magnum

Coming up for Valentine’s Day, the fourth edition of Magnum Days is a special edition on the theme of couples and love. Magnum Photos invites you to find the most original Valentine’s Day gift of 2012 and participate to an unusual, poetic, romantic, incredible, surprising… moment, in the heart of Paris. Couples have the opportunity to have their portrait taken together in temporary portraits’ studios (Hôtels Lutetia, Mama Shelter, La Belle Juliette, Hôtel Amour, MK2 Bibliothèque) by iconic Magnum photographers Steve McCurry, Paolo Pellegrin, Bruce Gilden, Antoine d’Agata and Christopher Anderson (Sat 11 Feb, 10am-7pm, reserve here). The portraits realised during the studios will then be presented to the public in an original installation at Colette on Tue 14 Feb. The legendary photography agency also throws open the doors of its Paris HQ for an exceptional 3-day open house, and sale of collectors editions, monographs, exhibition catalogues, posters, postcards etc. And on Valentine’s Day, 7pm, Christopher Anderson’s new show ‘Son’ opens with a selection of about 15 prints that record his intimate life with his wife and son.

Through a prism of politics and social issues leading up to France’s next presidential election in April, the Galerie Yvon Lambert brings together a handful of fine international artists – Gardar Eide Einarsson, Douglas Gordon, Francesco Vezzoli, Cerith Wyn Evans and the Parisian Loris Gréaud – to present new works or earlier pieces which echo the salient words of Marguerite Yourcenar from her 1958 essay ‘Faces of History in the Historia Augusta’: ‘… this atmosphere of inertia and panic, of authoritarianism and of anarchy; those pompous reaffirmations of a great past amid present mediocrity and immediate disorder; those reforms which are merely palliatives and those outbursts of virtue which manifest themselves only in purges; that sensationalism that ends up expediting the worst politics…”

Néon at Maison Rouge

Coming up at the Maison Rouge later this month is the first major international exhibition of neon art, from the 1950s to the present day. As early as the 1930s, Moholy-Nagy was predicting that it would not be long before the ‘field of expression’ formed by night-time city lights found ‘its own artists’. About 100 works will be presented in the exhibition, many of historical significance, many being shown for the first time. They will include pieces by such pioneers as Lucio Fontana from the early 1950s, François Morellet, Bruce Nauman, Stephen Antonakos, Joseph Kosuth and Mario Merz from the 1960s, and some of the many contemporary artists working in this medium today, such as Jason Rhoades, Sylvie Fleury and Claude Lévêque. Néon invites its public to follow and explore this simple line as it curves its way along innumerable winding, shining paths.

Adrian Brody stars in this grim indictment of the US education system, directed by Tony Kaye (American History X), and with a stellar cast including Christina Hendricks, James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden and Lucy Liu. The film picked up the International Critics Award and the Cartier Revelation Prize at Deauville last year. Brody stars as substitute teacher Henry Barthes, when a new assignment places him at a public school where a frustrated, burned-out administration has created an apathetic student body, he soon becomes a role model to the disaffected youth. Henry then realises that he’s not alone in his life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

The finalists of this year’s Hyères Fashion & Photography Festival have been selected from almost 300 hopefuls. The lucky ten are Jasmina Barshovi (Switzerland), Narelle Dore (Australia), Daniel Hurlin (France), Ragne Kikas (Estonia), Elina Laitinen, Siiri Raasakka & Tiia Siren (Finland), Maxime Rappaz (Switzerland), Paula Selby Avellaneda (Argentina), Lucas Sponchiado (Belgium), Steven Tai (Canada), and Kim Wilkins (UK). Once again this major international festival, which each year launches a new wave of fashion talent, boasts a jury on par with its ambitions, this year presided by Yohji Yamamoto, and with Marc Ascoli, Alan Bilzerian, Terry Jones, Pascale Mussard, Olivier Saillard, Jules Wright, Paolo Roversi, Christophe Honoré, Irène Silvagni. The winners will be announced during the festival in April.

Prada Paris flagship reopens

After 2 years in a “pop-up” store on the Place Beauvais, a few blocks down Rue du Faubourg-St-Honoré, Prada have at last reopened their Paris flagship, at number 6, near the corner of Rue Royal and La Madeleine. Italian architect Roberto Baciocchi has installed black-and-white tiles, black marble, mirrors and velvet throughout, according to a punchy red, blue and green color scheme. Three departments over three floors, for men, women and accessories; the women’s department on the ground floor features curvy Pantone sofas for fatigued shoppers.

Festival Standard Idéal

The 9th edition of the invigorating avant-garde theatre festival Le Standard Idéal is currently running at suburban theatre hotspot MC93. Presenting works The Fairy Queen and Israël from the 2012 festival revelation, Lisbon’s Teatro Praga company, star Hungarian director Péter Kárpáti presents Les Actes de Pitbull, Berlin’s Budapest born director David Marton returns to the festival with the international premier of Le Clavier bien tempéré, and the Catalan theatre director Calixto Bieito also returns to the festival with Desaparecer (Disappear), a rap on Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem ‘The Raven’.
