Today marks the start of the 65^th annual Cannes Film Festival. The official selection of 22 films will be judged by jury president Nanni Moretti and a jury whose members include Diane Kruger, Ewan McGregor and… Jean-Paul Gaultier. The winner of the Palme d’Or will be announced on 27 May. Two films premiering at Cannes and hitting screens nationally as of today are French director Jacques Audiard’s highly anticipated De Rouille et d’Os (Rust & Bone) and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Like last year’s Midnight in Paris, an American film again opens the festival. Moonrise Kingdom is about two twelve-year-olds who fall in love and decide to fun away together while they spend their summer on a New England island during the 60s. The all-star cast includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. Let’s see how Europeans react to Anderson’s quirky humour. (AP)

‘Secret Garden’ by Dior at Versailles

If Chanel presented their Cruise Collection at Versailles only yesterday, Dior got in first, celebrating their 60th birthday at the palace back in 2007, and their new video is set there too. ‘Secret Garden’ showcases the maison’s autumn/winter 2012 collection in la Galerie des Glaces and outside in the grounds, with models Daria Strokus, Melissa Stasiuk and Xiao Wen Ju. The cool factor is supplied courtesy of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who shot the film to Depeche Mode’s 1990 hit ‘Enjoy the Silence’.

The new show at new Marais design gallery Armel Soyer in the Marais is from brilliant local creative Mathias Kiss. SANS 90° unites and confronts three classical components of interior design: a mirror, a seat and a rug. Kiss’s Froisse mirror, Igloo seat and Magyar rug are all a logical suite of sculptural objects responding to Kiss’s ongoing work on the fold and two dimensional sculpture. Kiss does not stick to a straight line, he overlaps and spills over on purpose. His creations are deformed fragmented projections of an ornamental referenced reality on which he poses a sharp and iconoclastic eye…

Not to mention, enough food and drink to carry you from the late hours of the morning through to the early ones. Between a leisurely morning start and a stumbling walk home, you’ll find a constantly intriguing and changing array of top-notch coffee (sourced from Café Lomi), local produce, indie mags, well-selected DJs and a healthy appetite for the life of leisure. By the Canal St Martin, a new, mutating space is born, set up by LA antiquarian Lorca Cohen, fille de Leonard. It launched back in December with a first collab with those guerilla retail pioneers Comme des Garçons, and today has lent out half its space to neighbouring vintage hotspot Chez Chiffons, whose wearable couture pieces compliment Lorca’s objets from the past. And from mid June you will be able to visit here the Paris satellite of London’s newest avant-garde fashion hopeful Yang Li. It’s a special place to watch unfold.

Dark Shadows & W.E. out today

Hitting French screens today is Tim Burton’s latest Dark Shadows. As usual, the film stars Burton’s partner Helena Bonham Carter and his BFF Johnny Depp, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and… Alice Cooper. The film is based on a cult US TV series of the same name from the late 60s and tells the story of a vampire from the 18th century who wakes up in 1972, making for all sorts of gags about US pop culture. Unfortunately, not all films this week look quite as entertaining. Madonna returns to directing with another critical flop. W.E. follows lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward’s VIII’s abdication of the British throne for American divorcée Wallis Simpson. But Wally’s research reveals that the couple’s life together was not as perfect as she thought…

Uniqlo launch ‘Wake-Up’ app

Our favourite Japanese basics brand Uniqlo have just launched a cool free app available for iPhone and Android. A great new way to start your day, ‘Wake Up’ is a daily alarm featuring original music by Japanese experimental artists Cornelius and Yoko Kanno. The app also displays the time and temperature while playing one of the seven different musical selections, depending on the weather. Users can then share their wake-up times and weather conditions via their favourite social networks. Get it here.
