The Italian design giant Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007), best known as the founder of the 80s Memphis collective, demonstrates again his incredible inventivity in this retrospective of glass and porcelain works made at both the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres and CIRVA, (International Centre for Research on glass and plastic arts), based in Marseille. The exhibition is the result of close collaboration between the two French institutions who from the 90s onwards offered the technical expertise necessary for Sottsass to realise these complex pieces. The show has been put together by designer and friend of Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi.
Until 22 July. 6/4.5€

On the quiet end of the Rue St Maur, not far from other fave La Buvette, is this cool new Italian spot Cervo, set up by two young talents from Grazie. Their spring menu menu proposes authentic Italian flavours, including about 6 entrées and 6 mains: roast scampi and salad (9€) or an assortment of Italian charcuterie to share (13€), followed by beetroot risotto (15€) or monkfish à la plancha (14€) for example. At lunch, the set menu proposes 2 courses for 12€ or 3 for 15€. Chef Giacomo Romito has a soft spot for desserts, and the afternoon we visited his crème brûlée was exeptionally good. We’re looking forward to returning in the evening, when we hope they’ll turn up the sound system and let their hair down!
Open for lunch & dinner. Closed Sun, Mon.

The Berlin based photographer is well known for his assignments for edgy magazines including Dazed & Confused, Acne Paper, Butt, I-D, Fantastic Man, The Gentlewoman, Purple, Vogue, etc. His work has also been widely exhibited, including shows at KW Berlin, ICA, The Photographers’ Gallery London, Whitechapel Art Gallery, and Kunsthall Oslo, as well as projects with the artist collective Bernadette Corporation and his longtime collaborator, video artist Lars Laumann. This poetic and thought-provoking exhibition “Some Men” consists of twelve individual works photographed between 2005 and 2012, eleven of which were taken with the same 35mm analogue SLR camera. Without making any specific distinctions or hierarchies, the show mixes camera formats and printing techniques, and the framing techniques and materials are as varied and intimate as the works themselves. The subject matter consists of portraits of men – or at least biologically born men. The images vary from fathers with their children, young boys and naked trans women to a teenage gay couple kissing, yet all speak of gender perceptions and ideas of masculinity.
Until 21 May. 2-7pm. Closed Sun, Mon.

A few blocks north of the Pompidou Centre, Paris’ coffee renaissance is revving up with this new espresso bar. Channa Galhenage gets the best of the beans from famed Antwerp coffee shop and roastery Caffènation. But it’s not only the espresso variations and creamy cappuccinos that are luring in locals and passers-by – Loustic’s warm interior with 1950s geometric wallpaper designed by Dorothée Meilichzon, (designer of Hôtel Paradis and Pinson) will make this spot your second living room. Up front, a long couch is perfect for a tête-à-tête with small, wooden swinging tables, or head to the back of the cafe where there’s no shortage of comfy sofas. Or sink into a wicker basket chair and read from a selection of freshly stocked indie magazines in either French or English. Loustic also offers an affordable English brunch on weekends with granola, coffee, juice and pastries (€10-12). Local catering duo Emperor Norton does a lunch menu and there’s a yummy range of cakes, desserts and freshly squeezed juices too.

The Palais de Tokyo’s new restaurant and bar is above all a feast for the eyes. Exquisitely designed by Paris architect Joseph Dirand, it’s a ridiculously elegant space decorated in olive green tones and using noble materials such as marble and velvet. Giant picture windows stretch up 10 metres to the ceiling and overlook the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. An extensive terrace seems to embody all our la dolce vita fantasies. The menu has something for everyone, from roast chicken (23€), a large selection of fish dishes (22-45€), to veal, beef or pork. Then there’s the “raw bar” and its selection of oysters, prawns and caviar (50g Beluga 555€), and the “snacking” menu serves trendy junk food all day such as a fried chicken sandwich (18€) or lobster roll (25€). Wines by the glass start at 7€. More hipster details: Paris designer Alexis Mabille has designed the hot waiters’ bowties and waitresses’ white frocks. On Thu-Sat nights local beautiful people let their hair down to DJ sets.
Open daily, noon-2am.
13 Avenue du Président Wilson, 16th. 01 47 20 90 47. monsieurbleu.com
