Having first attracted widespread attention at the Venice Biennale of 2003 with his 'Cosmic Thing', a Volkswagen Beetle dismantled and suspended from the ceiling - an ironic deconstruction of one of the cult objects of consumer society - Damian Orgéga is now one of the best-known members of the rising generation of Mexican artists. Ortega began his career drawing political cartoons and his work is always marked by a certain acerbic playfulness. With irreverent eye, he parodies the purity of Minimalist sculpture. His sculptures, photographs and action pieces, which often make use of commonplace objects, suggest potential for development and perpetual change. A certain scepticism regarding the utopian forms of Modernist architecture and a distinct fondess for language games are also central to his work. The installation 'Champ de Vision' (Field of Vision) specially conceived for the Espace 315 is in keeping with other works that deal with the question of visual perception, such as 'Circular Perception' (1999). Rather than objects, Ortega offers here an experience of their perception that goes beyond the object itself to offer a knowledge of the object. The seeing eye is confronted with its own representation and the very process of its functioning. Through this installation, by insisting on the relativity of the viewpoint, Ortega offers a vision of man that, beyond questions of optics or kinetics, designates a new humanism at the end of an era of mechanical materialism.
Né en 1967 à Mexico, Damián Ortega est le premier artiste d'Amérique latine à exposer dans l'Espace 315. Il fait partie, avec Abraham Cruz-Villegas et Gabriel Kuri, des artistes les plus remarqués de la nouvelle génération mexicaine. Il a été révélé en 2003 par l'oeuvre 'Cosmic Thing,' à la 50e biennale de Venise, où une Coccinelle Volkswagen était démantelée et suspendue au plafond, déconstruction ironique d'un objet culte de la société de consommation mexicaine. Pour l'Espace 315, Ortega crée une installation qui fonctionne comme une camera oscura. Une collection de maquettes moléculaires en trois dimensions est présentée à l'entrée. Le visiteur pénètre ensuite dans l'espace central où quelque 6000 modules colorés sont suspendus au plafond. Au fond de la salle, le visiteur passe derrière une cimaise et découvre alors l'installation à travers une lentille... Avec ce projet, Damián Ortega reste fidèle à son principe de fragmentation et de dispersion des formes dans l'espace et permet aux spectateurs d'expérimenter littéralement le processus de la perception, qui relie l'œil au cerveau. 'Je souhaite souligner les zones transitoires entre les espaces intérieurs et extérieurs. Je recherche le sas, l'instant où l'objet devient image au travers du filtre de l'oeil, avant d'intégrer l'espace subjectif de l'esprit. Ce sas de transition est autant intérieur qu'extérieur. Ainsi, la réalité se transforme graduellement, elle devient souvenir, idée ou image mentale.'
