FUJIYA & MIYAGI: ‘LIGHTBULBS'
Fujiya and Miyagi's dabblings in the genre-blending Krautrock movement have not been in vain (Krautrock, or its longer title, Sauerkraut Rock, was originally coined by the British press to mock the experimental music scene that emerged in Germany during the 70s - it has since become a positive term referencing an eclectic and original mix of progressive rock, jazz, funk, classical music, and avant-garde ambient sounds). This quartet from Brighton shares with Krautrock's mythic groups a singular vision of music, and the similarities to artists such as Can are no coincidence. But Fujiya and Miyagi also understand how to break away from their predecessors into something truly their own. The superposition of vintage sound on percussion-like vocals and slightly funky bass, all supported by a light and hopping drum-kit, come together on Lightbulbs to give the album a real freshness. BJ
L‘affiliation de Fujiya & Miyagi au mouvement Krautrock par l'ensemble des médias n'est pas vaine (Krautrock ou rock choucroute, nom moqueur donné par la presse anglaise dans les années 70 à ce courant exclusivement allemand mené par Faust ou Neu!). Les quatre de Brighton partagent en effet avec ces groupes mythiques une singulière vision de la musique, faite de rythmiques et d'évocations électroniques. Sans être des plagiaires, la ressemblance avec des artistes tels que Can n'est pas fortuite. Mais ils savent aussi très bien s'affranchir des codes car le groupe a trouvé une véritable patte et des gimmicks typiques qui sortent Fujiya & Miyagi du lot. La superposition de sonorité vintage avec des vocaux utilisés comme des percussions, la basse un peu funk soutenue par une batterie légère et sautillante sont autant d'éléments qui participent à donner une vraie fraicheur à Lightbulbs.
