JEFF KOONS VERSAILLES
This unique exhibition presents 17 works by Koons, including his most significant pieces from the 80s to today. Rabbit, one of Koons' masterpieces, is located in Le Salon de l'Abondance for example, the antechamber of the ancient cabinet of curiosities. The work is one of the most well-known and emblematic of Koon's creations. In the Queen's apartments, Large Vase of Flowers is a colourful homage to the French Queen and to the theme of maternity, since it is presented in the rooom where the princes were born. The work also references Rococo, expecially to Fragonard and Boucher. The exhibition focuses on the close relationship between each work and the space surrounding it. The works have been selected specifically for the Royal Apartments on the ‘noble floor', composed of the King's apartments and the Queen's apartments, which form a suite of several connecting rooms. These large apartments are the most prestigious and importants spaces in the palace; Louis XIV's official halls, they were conceived as rich expressions of art and architecture. The works presented in the exhibition have been selected in situ by Jeff Koons, highlighting an inner relationship between each artwork and the theme of the room, or the specific features of the work and the decorative details and the furnishings of the location. Koons' work create a relation with these sumptuous royal apartments, extraordinary expressions of the Baroque period and visual representation of the grandeur of the Sun King. The exhibition continues in the gardens of the palace, where one major work Split Rocker, a sculpture created from 100,000 flowers, is installed in the Orangerie.
Le Château de Versailles accueille l'exposition Jeff Koons Versailles dans les appartements royaux et les jardins du château. Cette manifestation exceptionnelle présente 17 oeuvres de Jeff Koons, dont celles qu'il a réalisées des années 1980 à nos jours, et qui l'ont rendu célèbre. L'exposition s'intéresse particulièrement aux rapports intimes entre l'oeuvre et le cadre dans lequel elle s'incrit, en l'occurrence les Grands appartements de ‘l'étage noble', composés des appartements du Roi et des appartements de la Reine. Ceux-ci forment une suite de plusieurs pièces ‘en enfilade'. Ces Grands appartements figurent parmi les plus prestigieux et les plus importants du Château puisqu'ils constituaient les appartements officiels du Roi Soleil, véritables chefs d'oeuvre de l'art et de l'architecture. Les oeuvres présentées dans cette exposition ont été sélectionnées in situ par Jeff Koons, afin de mettre en valeur une relation entre chaque oeuvre et le thème de la pièce, ou encore entre les caractéristiques de l'oeuvre et le décor intérieur et l'ameublement, comme le mobilier d'époque, les sculptures ou les peintures qui ornent les murs et les plafonds. Le travail de Koons crée une mise en abîme avec ces somptueux apparements royaux, témoignages extraordinaires de l'époque baroque. Ces oeuvres sont symptomatiques du dialogue entre les recherches esthétiques de Jeff Koons et l'école baroque que l'artiste admire tout particulièrement. L'exposition se déroule également dans les jardins du Château où une création majeure de l'artiste, Split Rocker, sculpture réalisée avec plus 100,00 fleurs est installée dans le Parterre de l'Orangerie.
