What happens in a family of New York cops when their unwritten code of honour is compromised? Sons of a New York policeman, director Greg O'Connor and producer and twin-brother Gavin are familiar with the moral dilemmas faced by policemen and women on the frontline, and explore what happens when a member of the family succumbs to corruption. Edward Norton delivers a compelling performance as Ray Tierney, a former rising star of the NYPD whose ascension stalls when his integrity is called into question in an incident early in his career. Despite this (a bit incredulously), family patriarch Francis Tierney (played by the commanding Jon Voight) requests Ray to investigate the slaying of four police officers in the same squad as his brother-in-law Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) and in the same department as eldest brother Francis Junior (played memorably by Noah Emmerich). The choice between loyalty to the family, the force and his own conscience rests on Ray's shoulders as the harrowing story unfolds. The tight, jerky camera angles add to the tension of this morality tale, heavy going at 130 minutes. FJ
Dans la famille Tierney, on est policier de père en fils. Pour ce clan, le code sacré des flics qui consiste à protéger les siens est bien plus qu'un code d'honneur, c'est un code familial. Mais quelles sont les retombées quand le code est deshonoré? C'est la question qui est explorée dans ce conte moral de Gavin O'Connor. En tant que fils de policier new-yorkais, Gavin et son frère jumeau, le producteur Greg O'Connor ont vécu de l'intérieur ce que beaucoup des personnages affrontent dans le film. Edward Norton incarne Ray Tierney, que nous avons imaginé comme une étoile montante du NYPD dont l'ascension aurait été stoppée suite à un incident mettant en cause son integrité. Le bannissement volontaire de Ray prend fin lorsque son pere, Francis Tierney (incarne par Jon Voigt) par ailleurs superviseur des enqueteurs du district de Manhattan, lui demande de s'occuper d'une affaire de meurtre liée au trafic de drogue dans laquelle quatre policiers ont trouvé la mort. Colin Farrell joue le beau-frère de Ray, Jimmy Egan, dans la meme brigade, et Noah Emmerich joue l'ainé des fils Tierney, Francis Jr, un officier superieur. Indigeste et violent, le suspense est augmenté par le style secoué de tournage
