SPEED RACER
Pity poor Emile Hirsch, who was magnificent in Sean Penn's dramatic Into the Wild. How do you go from starring in such a powerful film to zooming around on green screens in Speed Racer, a dizzying Hollywood movie that uses CGI and color to such a degree that you leave the theater feeling like you've been through the spin cycle with a load of tie-dyes. The film is based on the 1960s Japanese manga series and is brought to the big screen by Matrix vets Larry and Andy Wachowski. Hirsch plays the title character, scion of a family of high-speed auto racers, bent on making a name for himself and fighting the baddies of Royalton Industries. Though well-acted by a solid cast (including Susan Sarandon and John Goodman as Speed's parents), the movie's plot is weak and the film devolves into little more than a joyride of the senses. SL
Speed Racer est la première réalisation des frères Larry et Andy Wachowski depuis la trilogie Matrix et est adapté de la série animée japonaise Mach Go Go Go (ou Mahha GoGoGo), créée par Tatsuo Yoshida sous la bannière des Productions Tatsunoko en 1967. Développé sur 52 épisodes, le programme connut un immense succès en Asie avant d'être exporté outre-Atlantique. Fans de la série animée, les deux frères assurent non seulement la réalisation, mais également l'écriture et la production de cette adaptation live. A leurs côtés, une équipe de fidèles échappés de la Matrice : les producteurs Joel Silver et Grant Hill, le chef-décorateur Owen Paterson, la costumière Kym Barrett et le monteur Zach Staenberg. Face au défi numérique de Speed Racer, les Wachowski Brothers ont par ailleurs fait appel à deux techniciens rompus aux univers digitaux : le directeur de la photographie David Tattersall et le monteur Roger Barton, à l'oeuvre, entre autres, sur la nouvelle trilogie Star Wars.
