An enviably controlled hysteria begins to take hold of local fashionistas in the days leading up to sale time in Paris; even battalions of shopping guerillas from neighbouring countries make special expeditions here, hoping to be the first to get their hands on, say, a Comme des Garçons chemise for a quarter of its original price. Twice a year, Paris boutiques sell off what’s left of seasonal stock at hugely reduced prices – up to 75 percent – to make way for incoming collections (winter stock is sold off this month, and over July summer stock gets the boot). So, as usual, it’s first in, best dressed.
