Suddenly the ‘orphanage thriller' has become a genre. Following Juan Antonio Bayona's El Orfanato comes David Tarde's La saison des orphelins, a poorly constructed, often boring film that will not do much to extend this developing genre. Alexandre is a misfit child who stands up to bully Achille, whose father has opened his scary castle to six orphans shortly after the Liberation. A mystery envelops the castle and its neighboring village when all the orphans disappear, leaving a conveniently amnesiac Alexandre and crazy Achille behind. In 1981, Alexandre returns to the site of the mystery after anonymously receiving a photo showing his 10-year-old self tied up and looking very afraid. He must confront the past, and of course, the ever more bizarre Achille in order to bring closure to the never-completed investigation, and more importantly, to find peace for himself. Unfortunately, there are few moments of real tension, unless one counts one of the most disgusting dinner scenes this side of Hannibal. SL
