‘Paris versus New York’ at Colette

Paris graphic designer Vahram Muratyan (Studio Viiiz) is currently presenting an exhibition at Colette of works developed for his successful blog ‘Paris versus New York, a tally of two cities’ . It’s the perspective of a lover of Paris on a New York filled with details, clichés and contradictions, a friendly visual match between the two cities. A number of signed, limited-editon prints are for sale too. And Editions 10-18 (Penguin in the UK) are publishing the book in November.

Edgy Danish fashion designer Henrik Vibskov has teamed up with French perfume giant Givaudan to develop a collection of unisex fragrances called TYPE, available in three scents, for three specific moments in three different cities: Type B (Berlin), Type C (Copenhagen), Type D (Damascus). Playing with the simplicity of the cities’ initial letters, the Eaux de Toilette reflect some of the characteristics of each of the represented cities: Type C is reminiscent of the salty air of Copenhagen’s harbour, Type B captures a cold winter’s day in the former Eastern part of the city, where – even today – numerous buildings and houses are heated with coal, Type C is inspired by the fantasy of the Middle East and the ancient marketplaces of Damascus on a hot summer’s day. The bottles and scent are manufactured in Grasse.

‘Beginners’ by Mike Mills out now

A new film by multi-talented director and graphic artist Mike Mills – who’s designed album covers for bands including Sonic Youth and The Beastie Boys, and shot videos for Air, Pulp, Moby and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – hit screens yesterday. After ‘Thumbsucker’ in 2005, ‘Beginners’ is a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be. Inspired by Mike Mills’ own father, the film explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor), who meets and falls in love with Anna (Mélanie Laurent) only months after his father (Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new relationship floods Oliver with memories of his father, who came out of the closet at age 75 to live a wonderfully tumultuous gay life. And to mark the release of the movie, Damiani Editions publishes ‘Drawing from the film Beginners’, a book containing 110 illustrations of the film by Mills, on sale at Colette.

April77 x Herman Dune

To coincide with the release of the new Herman Dune album ‘Strange Moosic’, local Paris fashion label April77 team up with the artist for a limited-edition capsule collection available exclusively at Colette and at April77 (49 rue de Saintonge). The collab includes revisited DAD chino pants and a t-shirt. The DAD chinos (120€) are available in two colors, Sun (Safari) and Burst (brick red). The t-shirt (35€)was manufactured using Old Timey equipment, and was then washed and flock-printed. David-Ivar ‘Yaya’ Herman Dune, singer and guitar player in the band, designs all of Herman Dune’s artworks. For this collab he designed all illustrations, from the labels to the packaging.

Chanel & Colette pop-up Rue St-Honoré

During Fashion Week (1-10 March), two of the city’s most emblematic brands will open a pop-up store where you can come and get your Chanel bag customised by a series of local talents including Kevin Lyons, Soledad, André, Fafi and SO-ME. Headlining creations from Chanel’s 2011 Spring-Summer collection will be juxtaposed with Colette’s selection of pieces by young designers. Other surprises will include a collector’s doll by Karl Lagerfeld, bag charms, helmets, cameras, the Colette compilation CDs and scented candles. Plus there’ll be a nail bar and a cupcake bar.
