Based on John Le Carré’s bestselling 1974 novel, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (La Taupe) is a brilliant thriller by director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) and nominated for 3 Oscars. It stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, a career spy for Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service who finds himself at the centre of a deadly international spy game. And out of the archives, Indie fave Abel Ferrara’s 2007 film Go Go Tales finally scores a release here. This screwball comedy is set in a downtown Manhattan cabaret and stars Willem Dafoe as the charismatic cabaret impresario Ray Ruby whose club Paradise is a factory of dreams for young dancers. The stellar cast also boasts Bob Hoskins as The Baron, Mattew Modine as Johnie Ruby, Asia Argento as Monroe and Lou Doillon as French.

Adrian Brody stars in this grim indictment of the US education system, directed by Tony Kaye (American History X), and with a stellar cast including Christina Hendricks, James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden and Lucy Liu. The film picked up the International Critics Award and the Cartier Revelation Prize at Deauville last year. Brody stars as substitute teacher Henry Barthes, when a new assignment places him at a public school where a frustrated, burned-out administration has created an apathetic student body, he soon becomes a role model to the disaffected youth. Henry then realises that he’s not alone in his life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

After dominating the Golden Globes earlier this month with 3 awards, the French, and silent, surprise hit of the year The Artist continues its triumph of the US with ten Oscar nominations (Actor In a Leading Role, Actress In a Supporting Role, Art Direction, Best Picture, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Music, Original Score, Writing, Original Screenplay), falling just behind Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (11 nominations). It’s nevertheless the most nominations a French film has ever held at the Oscars. In case you didn’t know, the film is directed by Michel Hazanavicius (OSS 117: Lost in Rio, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies) and stars Jean Dujardin as George Valentin, a popular screen star in the silent film era who with fellow actor Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) finds their careers and their relationship influenced by the coming of talking pictures. Valentin resists the transition to sound, while young Peppy Miller embodies a modern age that is leaving Valentin behind. All will be revealed at the Oscars on the evening of 26 Feb, US time.

Two worthy films hit screens nationally yesterday: Roman Polanski’s critically acclaimed ‘Carnage‘ premiered at Venice in September, then went on to open the New York Film Festival the following month. Based on acclaimed French playwright Yasmina Reza’s play God of Carnage, it’s a bitterly amusing story of two families who become locked in a showdown after their children are involved in a playground squabble. Shot in real time, the film shines a spotlight on the risible contradictions and grotesque prejudices of four well-heeled American parents.

Also showing is UK artist Steve McQueen’s hotly anticipated second feature ‘Shame’, following his Cannes award winning début in 2008 ‘Hunger’. ‘Shame’ tells the story of Brandon (Michael Fassbender), a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control.

The Berlin based Pictoplasma project is acclaimed for its unique focus on contemporary character design and figurative art. The annual festivals in Berlin and NYC have evolved to be the meeting points for an international audience of illustrators, designers, filmmakers and fine and urban artists. Now, the world’s leading festival of contemporary character culture celebrates its premiere in Paris, with the theme “Post Digital Monsters”, and a comprehensive program of installations, exhibition, artist conferences, performances and screenings… Why “Post Digital”? In reference to the fact that character design came to the fore with the rise of digital culture at the beginning of the noughties. The Internet and new technologies have revolutionised image re-interpretation and exchange. “Monsters?” Because the digital era has broken new ground in terms of virtual reality. Now the new territories just have to be peopled with attractive characters! These new icons make us feel we’re being watched by unknown entities from a parallel universe. Okay, so they’re cute, but aren’t they just a little too cute?…

Out today in France, The Black Power Mixtape, a prize-winning documentary produced by Danny Glover which mobilises a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by Swedish journalists between 1967-1975 who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Gaining access to many of the leaders of the Black Power Movement, Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them, the filmmakers captured them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television.

Also worth noting, the surprise hit at Cannes this year Sleeping Beauty, a haunting and provocative Australian film début by Julie Leigh, produced by Jane Campion: ‘You will go to sleep: You will wake up. It will be as if those hours never existed.’ Death-haunted, quietly reckless, Lucy (Emily Browning) is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep….

For Hollywood releases, don’t miss the ‘based on a true story’ drama Moneyball (Le stratège) starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and described as ‘one of the best movies of the year’ by Rolling Stone magazine. Pitt plays the the Oakland A’s general manager who defies conventional wisdom & outsmarts his competition when forced to reinvent his baseball team with bargain players.
