‘La Maison’ by Hermès

The luxury French house, which already spreads its talents across fashion, accessories, riding paraphernalia, perfumes, jewellery and watches, presented its first furniture collection ‘La Maison’ at the Milan Furniture Fair earlier this month. Designed by Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the AD of Hermès, along with design giants Enzo Mari and Antonio Citterio, the superb collection counts 10 or so elegant pieces that merge traditional and contemporary forms. Hermès has also associated with the Italian brand Dedar for a line of wallpaper, textiles and rugs.

Hermès on the Left Bank

Last week Hermès opened their 3rd Parisian store, and first (after 130 faithful years at 24 Faubourg St-Honoré, and 18 on the Ave George V) for the Left Bank! (The brand’s pop-up store, at 16 rue de Grenelle, has now closed.) The enormous new, 2-floor, space occupies the Hôtel Lutétia’s Art Déco (1935) former swimming pool. The store, Hermès’ second largest in the world, devotes 40% of its massive 2,000m2 to homewares, with magnificent displays of furniture, rugs, wallpaper and fabrics. Mosaics abound, and the enormous space contains 3 ashwood cocoons, light and airy and over 8 metres tall, which provide intimate themed spaces. You’ll also find a florist, a bookhop and a tea room. Hermès’ superb collaboration with Colette on 4 limited-edition scarves ‘Hermès for colette’ are now on sale, in their own special orange box on the first floor of the concept store (in addition to a selection from Hermès Fall-Winter scarf collection). The orange box presents colette exclusives: the classic Brides de Gala in two shades, the patchwork (each scarf is unique!)and a losange in cashmere and silk. J’aime mon carré, ‘I love my scarf’. Hermès are launching an international campaign promoting their silk scarves to the young and groovy. Countries as far afield as Australia and the Czech Republic will hold special events to celebrate the who and the how of the mythical scarf. There’ll be a magazine by UK photographer Matt Irwin, with art director Dean Langley and stylist Francesca Burns. They travelled to New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, to create a fanzine around 4 girls and their lives and loves – friends, lovers, places, and of course, their scarves. www.jaimemoncarre.com the website will launch soon listing and reporting on all the events taking place around the planet, as well as a link to the recently inaugurated Hermes Facebook page. Christophe Lemaire replaces Jean-Paul Gaultier at Hermès

Lacoste’s AD, and designer of his own label, Christophe Lemaire is to replace Jean-Paul Gaultier at Hermès as head of womenswear. After 7 years at the helm, Gaultier will present his last collection, summer 2011, for the luxury French brand next October in Paris. It was Jean-Louis Dumas, former president and chief executive officer of Hermès who passed away recently, who signed on Gaultier, and the company retains a 45 percent stake in his house.

Hermès‘ brilliant window-dresser / designer Leïla Menchari, of Tunisian descent, has been using the windows of Hermès flagship at 24 rue du Faubourg St Honoré as theatres for her dreams and memories for over 30 years. This exhibition pays homage to her talent by faithfully recreating 8 of her most impressive creations, elaborate mini-worlds which transport you across time and continents. But the exhibition doesn’t just show off Menchari’s skills, it’s also a showcase for the craftsmen responsible for the incredible saddles, mosaics, or rugs that make up the decor. And the craftsmen are actually present in the exhibition, set up in workshops, where you can witness first-hand their expertise.

Hermès lands on the Left Bank

In a history making move, Hermès, the luxury French brand dedicated to tradition and continuity, has set up a pop-up store! While renovations continue on their first ever Left Bank space (on the 2,500m2 site of the Lutetia’s 1930s former swimming pool, near the Bon Marché at 17 rue de Sèvres), they’ve opened a store at 16 rue de Grenelle, in the old Miu Miu space, with cardboard sculptures by Damien Blottière.
