The hype started last summer with some demolition-style parties when the hotel was still under construction. But Paris’ first ‘gay-friendly’ boutique hotel has finally opened. Its 23 chic and comfortable rooms are spread across a purpose-built building and two houses, and give on to either Paris rooftops or the charming paved interior courtyard that features a magnificent vertical garden. The fit-out has a focus on simple, durable materials such as glass, wood, stone, and concrete. But all comfort is included, from air-conditioning to docks for your iPod and free wi-fi. Prices range in low season from 180€ for the smallest room, to 550€ in high season for the duplex apartment. On the ground floor, you’ll find the light and airy bar, breakfast room and library, plus the hotel lobby which doubles as a contemporary photo gallery, with works for sale, and these zones are worth a visit whether you’re a hotel guest or not.

Thoumieux opened its boutique hotel quietly in April. The Jean-François Piège (ex Crillon) / Thierry Costes collab already had all the food critics yapping, with the opening of the downstairs brasserie early last year. In October, the upstairs gastronomic restaurant opened and already boasts 2 Michelin stars. Like the hotel, it is decorated by India Mahdavi, and provides a very relaxed (armchairs at tables) and spacious environment to enjoy Piège’s exceptional cuisine. Each day a small selection of ingredients are presented, and you choose to sample 1, 2 or 3 of them; for dinner the complete dégustation menu will set you back 175€, and at lunch, 2 ingredients plus wine and dessert, 85€. The 15 rooms of the hotel are decorated in Mahdavi’s colorful ‘maximalist’ style, with elegantly paired wallpaper, carpet and upholstery designs. There’s a strong 50s element to the furniture, and bathrooms are marble with Aesop toiletries. Paris design crew M/M, who have previously collaborated with Thierry Costes on the café Etienne-Marcel, worked on a number of elements too: the logo, an elaborate light fitting in the Elodie bar, designs incorporated into the restaurant’s carpet, or the design of the brass door handles throughout the hotel… Room prices start at just 150€ for the luxe bolthole, and the other rooms go to 400€+ during Fashion Week. The whole experience sythesises contemporary Parisian luxury.

The hotel that Maison Martin Margiela decorated is open for business. After developing their minimalist luxe style for a first interiors project back in 2008 in Paris for the ‘Elle Décoration’ suite at the Cité Chaillot, Maison Martin Margiela then decorated one suite for a hotel in Bordeaux, Les Sources de Caudalie, and now present their ‘couture’ concept for 7 suites and 10 rooms (of a total of 57), plus the restaurant La Table du Huit, and lobby areas, of the 19th-century 4-star hotel, La Maison Champs-Elysées. They have created ‘a theatrical universe, where reality and make-believe blend.’ There’s the signature MMM white-out, of course, the cotton chair covers, the trompe l’oeil, but also black and leather for the smoking room, and gold, silver and wood details throughout. And the Maison’s poetic sense of humour. Public rates start at about 760€ per night.

A colourful, new 42-room hotel designed by Matali Crasset has just opened in Paris, near Bastille. The modular, ecological ‘hi’ hotel ‘concept’ started back in 2003 with the Hi Hotel in Nice. Award-winning designer Crasset has developed a new type of hotel: practical and accessible, mixing up the codes of an urban hotel and countryside bed and breakfast, and with strong ecological values. The hotel rooms are designed like a kind of cubby house, functional yet fun, and meant to trigger childhood memories. Room prices range from about 140-170 Euros per night, include organic continental breakfast and free wi-fi access, but right now the hotel is offering special promotional rates to celebrate the opening. Book online. (And by the way, Matali Crasset divulges her favourite spots in Paris in the current edition of our guide, both for iPhone and in print.)

Our favourite new boutique hotel in Paris, Le Citizen on the Canal St Martin, is now serving lunch in its delightful little ground-floor dining room. Petit Usagi (‘little rabbit’ in Japanese) is a satellite operation of the Northern Marais restaurant Usagi, and serves a simplified version of its tasty, healthy and creative franco-japanese menu. Funky chef/owner Shinsuke Kawahara personally serves you his daily changing selection of bentos (tofu, fish or meat), plus there’s pita sandwiches, soup of the day, tea and green-tea cake (15-20€ for a complete menu). They also do take-away, for picnicking on the canal when the sun’s shining.
96 quai de Jemmapes, 10th.
