For 2011 the typically libidinous Pirelli Calendar (last year shot by the horny and très heterosexual Terry Richardson) has been shot by M. Karl Lagerfeld. Fashion’s most famous ‘asexual’ chose Greek mythology as his elevated theme and posed Julianne Moore plus 21 international ‘top models’ for the divine series of 36 black-and-white snaps.

This well-put-together exhibition devoted to the German art, photography, and now literature, publisher Steidl illustrates the different elements involved in a range of publishing projects: the artist’s work, of course, but also friendships, technical challenges, the dialogue with the editor, the printing… Via presentations dedicated to some of the publisher’s emblematic photographers, from Robert Frank to Karl Lagerfeld, Massimo Vitali or the artist Ed Ruscha, we witness the genesis of each publication, and the passage from the work to the book format. Set up by Gerhard Steidl in Göttingen in 1972, Steidl is both a publisher and printer, boasting a unique quality of book production.

A new show, going up the 15th at Maison Européenne de la Photographie, mixes Karl Lagerfeld’s glossy editorial work with more personal snaps: of parties and people, architecture and landscapes. Talk about the German work ethic! The Kaiser’s head is so crowded with fantasies that designing for Chanel, Fendi, and his own line – as well as personally photographing their ad campaigns, giving makeovers to dying newspapers and Coke bottles, and moonlighting in the world of fast fashion – isn’t enough to satisfy his creative drive. The designer claims that peering through a camera is essential to his creativity, providing necessary critical detachment, and the show promises private observations from a more personal Karl. Of course, it’s easy to scoff at the idea of Lagerfeld having either a private life or an informed idea of the world outside his armored Hummer. But remember that photos included date all the way back to when he started taking pictures in 1987 – only five years into his tenure at Chanel – and long before the chemo-calibre slim-down and the frenzy of bling decade television appearances made him a mega-watt international star.

WWD announced last week that Karl Lagerfeld will be shooting the 2011 Pirelli Calendar. The shoot with all the sexy top models is scheduled for April at Karl’s studio. Last year, the coveted calendar was shot by the libidinous Terry Richardson, and we’re curious to see how Karl will respond to the project’s traditional heterosexual charge….

A short black-and-white film ‘Vol de Jour’, starring Lara Stone and Baptiste Baptiste Giabiconi, by Karl Lagerfeld. A modern-day Bonnie & Clyde with a Chanel fetish start their day on the Place Vendôme at the Chanel jewellery store by stealing a Chanel motorbike parked out the front, and go on to the brand’s HQ round the corner at 31 rue Cambon to continue their luxury theivery. Notice the film’s wobbly hand-held style, and the curious onlookers in the street scenes.
