The hotel that Maison Martin Margiela decorated is open for business. After developing their minimalist luxe style for a first interiors project back in 2008 in Paris for the ‘Elle Décoration’ suite at the Cité Chaillot, Maison Martin Margiela then decorated one suite for a hotel in Bordeaux, Les Sources de Caudalie, and now present their ‘couture’ concept for 7 suites and 10 rooms (of a total of 57), plus the restaurant La Table du Huit, and lobby areas, of the 19th-century 4-star hotel, La Maison Champs-Elysées. They have created ‘a theatrical universe, where reality and make-believe blend.’ There’s the signature MMM white-out, of course, the cotton chair covers, the trompe l’oeil, but also black and leather for the smoking room, and gold, silver and wood details throughout. And the Maison’s poetic sense of humour. Public rates start at about 760€ per night.

After developing their minimalist luxe style for a first interiors project back in 2008 in Paris for the ‘Elle Décoration’ suite at the Palais de Chaillot, Maison Martin Margiela then decorated a suite for a hotel in Bordeaux, L’ile aux Oiseaux, and now prepare to attack the decoration for the 7 suites and 10 rooms, plus the restaurant and lobby areas, of the 4-star hotel, La Maison Champs-Elysées, built in 1866. They plan to create ‘a theatrical universe, where reality and make-believe blend.’ The reopening is planned for April 2011.

Tradition is a dirty word when you’re talking about the avant-garde. But Maison Martin Margiela’s intimate show last night at the Halle Freyssinet had something ultra traditional to it. Deconstructed bien sûr, but traditional all the same. Models sulked through pools of light around which the press sat on little wooden chairs from different periods. It was very far from the stadium chill of some of today’s fashion mega-events. Of course, Margiela himself has officially left the house, so everyone has been anxious to see what the kingdom becomes without its king. Well, marvellous, actually. As always, Margiela is allergic to romance and whimsy and addicted to fine tailoring and that exploded detail that undermines your idea of accepted style. The design team behind the house have inherited the founder’s impatience for the kind of seasonal gimmicks (the Balmain shoulder, the bourgeois love affair) that make a collection feel cloying. The totem-pole headpieces in faux fur that tottered out at the end of the show (evening looks?) were captivating, and sure to pop up in gloss spreads from here to the Cleveland Plain, but the most innovative details were in the outsize waistlines and sheer drapery that showed a novel blend of strength and vulnerability.

The Maison Martin Margiela (now operating without its master, who departed sometime late last year) is about to launch their first ever perfume ‘untitled’, available exclusively at Colette from this coming Monday, and then via department stores in March, then everywhere else from 15 April.

Considering Martin Margiela’s notoriously reclusive reputation it’s quite funny to imagine celebrity – even in the arty packaging of R.E.M.’s front man Michael Stipe – collaborating with Antwerp’s fabled and fortressed avant-garde prince. But in some whitewashed loft in Belgium or New York just such a meeting must have taken place, the proof being the ‘MS09′ limited-edition collection of 199 numbered, signed and wearable microcassette ‘sculpturettes’ available now (for around 400 euros), to wear or to contemplate.
