Rei Kawakubo keeps challenging retail conventions with yet another pop-up store, this one selling the BLACK range, a special collection of re-edited (and unbelievably affordable!) pieces, to celebrate Comme des Garçons 40th (yes, 40th!) birthday. The discreet little store will remain open throughout 2010. Jacques Génin, black-belt in chocolate making, reins over this minimal, airy tea room at the top of the rue de Turenne. Here you can enjoy an excellent tea, coffee or hot chocolate along with one of Genin’s exquisite creations: caramels, marshmallow, nougats, and chocolates, as well as a small number of patisseries: éclairs, lemon or [...] This new Northern Marais address, just off rue Charlot, sells healthy and tasty home-made sweet or savoury tarts to take away or to eat in. There’s a whiff of Scandinavian design in the clean space with its open kitchen, communal tables and lovely Danish crockery. At lunch you can choose a set menu of soup, [...] Multi-tasking hipsters Surface to Air opened a new space in the Marais last week. The big new flagship, next door to the gallery Yvon Lambert on the rue Vieille du Temple, presents their indie fashion collaborations with Justice, Solve Sundsbo plus a brand new range, a partnership with rockers Kings of Leon. In keeping with [...] Fashion designer Alix Thomsen (she used to work for Lemaire at Lacoste, and is also, incidently, Lionel from La Clique’s lady friend) has just launched her eponymous luxury shirt label, with a cute store at the top of the Marais selling the classic but funky little range, for men and women. Stéphane Verdino’s bags practically merit their own dictionary subentry under the word minimalist: no lining, no ornament or logo, strict angles, with all the luxury poured into materials and geometry. Our favourite sacs at the new shop (10 rue Charlot) come in chrome or aluminum blues and make us think of old Helmut Lang [...] To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Comme des Garçons has set up a bunch of pop-up stores around the globe selling their recently unveiled , and equally ephemeral, BLACK range, composed of pared-down versions of Comme classics in, you guessed it, black.
