Acne’s new Paris flagship, joining the Palais Royal gem, opened last month in Rue Froissart, across the street from the Bonton concept store. The exquisite new space combines raw industrial elements with clean Scandinavian influences. Shoppers are greeted at the entrance by golden yellow glass and the silhouette of a marble sculpture by English artist Daniel Silver. The existing rough industrial walls of this former garage form the backdrop to a new, clean and contemporary space. Natural coloured carpets contrast with rough concrete walls. Set-like partitions are made from aluminum, hard on the outside but soft on the inside. The ceilings are dark blood red, punctuated by LED lighting. The walls morph into long benches, becoming display areas as well as seating… Don’t miss.

Joining the macaroon (Ladurée, Pierre Hermé etc), then cupcake (Chloé S, Berko etc) craze, here comes a new vogue in patisserie: the cream puff. This original new cake concept in the Northern Marais, just next door to Comme des Garçons Play, is dedicated to choux pastry puffs: bite-size balls of light-as-a-feather choux pastry filled with different flavoured cream and custard fillings and coated with a minimal monochrome disc of icing in a matching flavour. Named after the Italian patissier who invented choux pastry back in 1540, Popelini prepares fresh puffs daily, and on the premises.
1.80€ per puff, or 6 for 11€.

Losing Day

Losing Day is the latest born of the Noir Kennedy tribe. Across the street from Le Progrès in the Northern Maraism it is a pared-down, Berlin-esque add on to the dark, brimming Noir Kennedy on rue du Roi de Sicile. The old TV screens in the window à la Nam June Paik, and the 50-odd euros price-range make it an appealing stop for tourists and post-brunch hipsters. Remove the graves and Beetlejuice, add lots of dead stock (vintage 90s sportsgear and Black Lips concert t-shirts) and luminous white walls and tah-dah! You get a shop that could be called ‘Blanc Kennedy’.

Béatrice Saint-Laurent has the kind of intellectual sex appeal Americans would find terribly French. Her life – which includes a nearly unheard of departure from the French civil service’s gilded upper spheres where she worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – has been marked by a passion for collecting and rarity. The smouldering Parisian semiotician is as cosy with Ferdinand de Saussure as she is with Yves Saint-Laurent which poses an embarrassingly luxurious question: which talent to exploit in a fabulous new Northern Marais gallery designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance with a wrap-around vortex in Corian? The answer seems to be a focus on tightly edited lifestyle collections, featuring hand-painted python bags, hybridized polystyrene/porcelain housewares by Djim Berger, and a somewhat frightening brute-metal ‘lovers’ chair’ with a built-in echo chamber by Miami/Basel’s ‘Designer of the Future’, Nacho Carbonell. If you’re expecting prices as astronomical as the gathered talent you might want to slip on your readers and take a look at that tag: smaller pieces start at around 100€.

Florian Denicourt on Rue Charlot

Street cred and high-quality, made-in-France stitching and skins have pushed Florian Denicourt – who made his début designing accessories for Vanessa Bruno – from the carefully edited offerings of Maison Jean-Baptiste to the spotlit shelves of fashion emporiums like Le Bon Marché and the massively upscaled Printemps Haussmann. Denincourt’s first boutique in the Northern Marais stocks some great examples of the best new developments in men’s accessories. Not that girlfriends are left out: the store offers Denicourt’s androgynous takes on classic cargo, Kelly, and saddle bags too, plus there’s some shoes and a few leather jackets for him and her. You have to be close to the pieces to appreciate their quality: the slightly sullen sag of perforated suede and patent and the chromed zippers that seem ripped off rock leathers (masculinity – like the devil – is in the details).

New Bonton flagship opens today

The lovely French kidswear label Bonton opens to the public their massive new flagship today. In the former Zuber (mythic handmade wallpapers) showroom at the very top of the Marais, the enormous 3-floor space reunites all the brand’s collections: baby, ‘bazar’ the interiors collection, and also Papillon, a more high-end label. There’s also a vintage ‘photomaton’ where you can have your picture taken, a hairdresser’s, a candy bar, a library… The airy, spare chic of it all calls to mind new concept store Merci, just a block or two away, and owned by the same family.
