Swiss conceptual artist John M Armleder curates the autumn season of the Palais de Tokyo’s Carte Blanche’ series. ‘All of the Above’ is the rerun in reverse of ‘None of the Above’, an earlier exhibition curated by the artist at the Swiss Institute in New York in 2004. Each of the works was distinguished by its extremely small size, or even its immaterial nature. From None of the Above to All of the Above, invisibility gives way to photogenic qualities. As the Palais de Tokyo is undergoing major renovations throughout 2011, artists are being invited to devise an exhibition in the former auditorium. Armleder has decided to use the platform in the form of a stage and has invited around 20 artists, including Sylvie Fleury, Robert Longo, Mathieu Mercier, Jim Shaw and Xavier Veilhan, to present a work there. Whatever the nature of the works (painting, sculpture, video), placed on this stage they are subject to a frontal viewpoint and a visual superimposition making the whole effect oscillate between chaotic entanglements, groundbreaking meetings, and mixtures of genres.
Until 31 Dec. Tue-Sun, noon-9pm.

Together, neighbouring art institutions the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d’Art Moderne present this massive survey of the up-and-coming generation (under 35 years old) of artists working in France today. Forty artists each present one work (of every technique and style, including painting, video and sculpture) in each museum, creating a powerful experience in stereo, and this summer’s blockbuster show! As well as promoting emerging French art, the show becomes an interesting demonstration of the impact of the museum space and the hanging choices on the experience of viewing an exhibition too, as despite seeing 40 works by the same artists in twin buildings, the two exhibitions have totally different outcomes.
Opening tomorrow, until 5 Sep.

‘1916: Le Corbusier builds a “Turkish Villa” at La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), the Villa Schwob, flanked by a pergola. A few years later, he publishes photos of it in L’Esprit Nouveau. On the ground, in front of the villa, a white mark indicates a retouch. The pergola has disappeared. Less than a century later, the Iraki journalist Mutazer Al-Zaïda throws one of his shoes at George W. Bush’s head.’
The mysterious first show at Palais de Tokyo for the new decade consists of 3 individual mini exhibitions from artists Valentin Carron, Charlotte Posenenske and Raphaël Zarka, plus two special projects by Serge Spitzer and Laith Al-Amiri. As was the case for the last two shows here, Pergola creates a slightly uneasy atmosphere: there is nostalgia in the form of Zarka’s old skateboarding films, modernity in Posenenske’s robust and industrial metal structures, and a feeling of unrest created by the vast and drab wall installed the length of the gallery or the Iraki artist Al-Amiri’s larger-than-life shoe.
Until 16 May

The temporary exhibition in the Palais de Tokyo’s mezzanine gives visitors the chance to escape to a small group of Japanese islands where Benesse Art Site Naoshima has been conducting a 20-year experiment on the relationship between art-architecture and society. The project began with a series of architectural commissions by Tadao Ando on the island of Naoshima, including Benesse House and the Chichu Art Museum, and has now been extended to the neighbouring islands of Teshima, Megijima, Inujima, Ogijima and Shodoshima, and to other architects (Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA, Hiroshi Sambuichi) and artists Yayoi Kusama, Rei Naito and Christian Boltanski, who is preparing to open a museum of heartbeats as his contribution to the project. The exhibition includes scale models, video and installations of the different projects being developed in Naoshima and, short of jumping on a plane to Osaka, its the next best thing. Last days (until 8 November)!

In the wake of the exhibitions Gakona and Spy Numbers, the Palais de Tokyo’s new group show is again thick with intrigue, with 18 artists whose works also read as instruction manuals on how to withdraw into seclusion and take refuge in the limits of the visible. Painter Paul Laffoley deals with occultism, paganism and Catholicism all at once in his densely detailed canvases, whilst Ryan Gander gives us a glimpse of another world with his spooky installation ‘Nathaniel Knows’, which consists of a darkened room with an intriguing hole in the wall. The exhibition explores the notion of seclusion and social anarchy – Tony Matelli burns 500 euro notes while Robert Kusmirowski reconstructs the Unabomber’s secluded cabin – and questions both the restraints of society and a subsequent withdrawal from the world.
