YSL’s TV ad for Belle d’Opium, their new feminine fragrance, has been banned in the UK for references to drug use. Directed by controversial Paris filmmaker Romain Gavras (Notre jour viendra/ Redheads), the clip stars French actress Melanie Thierry dancing to a choreography by Akram Khan. 13 people in the UK filed complaints about a gesture where she points to her inner arm and then runs her finger down her arm. YSL Beauté said it ‘suggests the addictive qualities of women who wear the fragrance, rather than the addictive effects of narcotics.’ At the end of the clip, a voice over intones: ‘I am your addiction, I am Belle d’Opium. The new fragrance by Yves Saint Laurent.’

Two years after his controversial clip for Justice, ‘Stress’, French director Romain Gavras explores similar, violent, territory with a new clip for the first single from brilliant UK artist M.I.A‘s new album. Gavras illustrates MIA’s hardcore electro track (whose power, btw, comes from heavy samples of Suicide’s brilliant 1977 track ‘Ghost Rider’) with a 9 minute dystopian tale about a ginger-haired genocide in the US, which apart from scenes of exploding red-haired children, includes other shocking scenes such as fat people having sex or old people smoking crack. As with the ‘Stress’ clip, the music becomes a soundtrack to a mini-film, with no appearance from the musicians. Gavras is currently shooting his first feature Notre jour viendra, a road-movie across the UK starring Vincent Cassel and out next September.
