His minimal, monumental Cor-ten steel sculptures balance delicately in the gardens of the palace and the Marly Estate, highlighting the symmetry of the landscape and architecture.
One of the most impressive features of the Versailles palace, the double stone staircase was designed by royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel and built in 1772, but was left uncompleted until 1985. The project to install contemporary works on this site was originally given to Daniel Buren, before a change of direction via the creation of a design competition. The Bourroullec brothers should reveal their project for the site shortly. (And from 7 Oct, the Centre Pompidou-Metz will present the first major retrospective in France dedicated to their elegant work.)

After Jeff Koons and Xavier Veilhan, this year contemporary Japanese artist Murakami will be bringing his super bright and superflat art to Louis IX’s opulent abode for the season’s blockbuster show. Murakami explains ‘Just as French people can find it hard to recreate in their minds an accurate image of the Samurai period, the history of this palace has become diminished for us in reality. So it is probable that the Versailles of my imagination corresponds to an exaggeration and a transformation in my mind so that it has become a kind of completely separate and unreal world. That is what I have tried to depict in this exhibition. I am the Cheshire cat that welcomes Alice in Wonderland with its diabolic smile, and chatters away as she wanders around the Château. With a broad smile I invite you all to discover the wonderland of Versailles.’ The show opens to the general public on Tuesday.
Tue 14 Sep-12 Dec. Twenty-three works, painting and sculptures, with eight created especially for this show, are installed in the Grand Apartment and Hall of Mirrors, and included in the tour of the Grand Apartment.
