The Berlin based Pictoplasma project is acclaimed for its unique focus on contemporary character design and figurative art. The annual festivals in Berlin and NYC have evolved to be the meeting points for an international audience of illustrators, designers, filmmakers and fine and urban artists. Now, the world’s leading festival of contemporary character culture celebrates its premiere in Paris, with the theme “Post Digital Monsters”, and a comprehensive program of installations, exhibition, artist conferences, performances and screenings… Why “Post Digital”? In reference to the fact that character design came to the fore with the rise of digital culture at the beginning of the noughties. The Internet and new technologies have revolutionised image re-interpretation and exchange. “Monsters?” Because the digital era has broken new ground in terms of virtual reality. Now the new territories just have to be peopled with attractive characters! These new icons make us feel we’re being watched by unknown entities from a parallel universe. Okay, so they’re cute, but aren’t they just a little too cute?…
Wed 7-Sat 31 Dec. 2-8pm. Closed Mon.

‘Any Ever’ is the first major exhibition in France by the young LA based art duo Lizzie Fitch & Ryan Trecartin. For over five years now the pair ‘s videos, installations and sculptures have been blowing consumer culture and intergenerational relations up to absurd proportions. Any Ever is an expanding universe, one you can enter only by consenting to reconsider the codes of the real world and the rules of language. The outcome of two years’ work with the artists, the exhibition has been designed as a protean environment, involving the viewer in a joyous, endlessly anarchic cut-and-paste process.
Until Sun 8 Jan 2012. am-6pm (10pm Thu). Closed Mon.

It’s been a good year for Berlin-based Israeli artist Keren Cytter. As well as appearing in New York’s New Museum exhibition Younger than Jesus, a show of contemporary artists born after 1976, and this year’s Venice Biennale, she also made number 2 on Flash Art magazine’s most promising artists list, and won the 2009 Absolut Art Award! Her first solo show in France is now on at the Plâteau. The space has been reconfigured to create a maze of video projections, reflecting their fragmented and perplexing narratives, which seem violent or tragic even if it’s not quite clear why. The pieces on show include Repulsion (2006), Der Spiegel (2007) and Four Seasons (2009). Shown on multiple screens or on a continuous loop, the stories have no beginning or end, and the films leave the viewer feeling destabilised and trapped.
(Until 14 Feb)
It’s worth noting too that her 75 min film The Great Tale of The Devil’s Hill and The Endless Search for Freedom (2007-2009) will be screening at the Pompidou Centre, as part of their Prospectif Cinema cycle, on Thu 28 Jan, 8pm.
