PETER VON POEHL
A special set of shows at the Maroquinerie this week when the celebrated Swedish singer/ composer/ musician/ director PVP provides an exclusive avant-premiere of his forthcoming album May, due out in autumn. Von Poehl has collaborated with a number of other highly regarded artists such as Florian Horwath, Michel Houllebeq and Vincent Delerme. His acoustic and vocal style summons the ghosts of Nick Drake and Elliot Smith while paying homage to the early Paul Simon and Gordon Lightfoot, the living and the dead. Who said Paris's music scene stopped in July? JH
Repéré dans le sillage de Bertrand Burgalat et de son label Tricatel, Peter von Poehl a été le guitariste du groupe A.S. Dragon, alors backing band de Burgalat lui-même et de Michel Houellebecq sur son album Présence humaine (2000). Par la suite, von Poehl a poursuivi ses collaborations comme musicien et réalisateur avec d'autres artistes tels que notamment Doriand (Le Grand bain), Lio (Dites au prince charmant), Marie Modiano (I'm not a rose) ou encore Florian Horwath (We are all gold) avec qui il a créé le label Graeferecordings à Berlin. Son premier album intitulé Going to where the tea-trees are est sorti le 9 mai 2006 en France sur le label tôt Ou tard. Depuis, il a notamment réalisé le troisième album de Vincent Delerm, Les Piqûres d'araignée (2006) -dans lequel il fait une apparition avec la chanson « Marine »-, avant d'entamer une longue série de concerts, notamment en première partie des groupes Phoenix (automne 2006) et Air (printemps 2007).
BECK
I used to be ready to start hating Beck. He's huge, so the get-huge-start-sucking syndrome would surely arrive any day. Now I've become a Beck-lifer. Clearly one of the most talented songwriters and performers of our age. He will be pushing his first album in two years, Modern Guilt, which promises to return to his quirk folk, laced with electro-guile. It's a pretty penny this ticket, but I dare say he's worth it. In addition to his aural charms, the dude can boogie. JH
Un des personnages les plus éclectiques et innovateurs à avoir immergé de la ‘révolution alternative' des années 90, Beck était l'epitome du chic postmoderne dans une époque obsédée de la culture ‘junk'. Son style dit ‘pop-junk culture collage', ses paroles ironiques, son adepte bidouillage (montage maison) et ses mélanges peu probables de styles aussi variés que le pop, folk, psychédélique, hip-hop, country, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise rock, rock expérimental, jazz, lounge, et la musique latine, font qu'il innove à chaque nouvel album. Il est de retour avec son nouveau disque Modern Guilt.
MY MORNING JACKET
Louisville, KY has for many years now had the indie power to thumb its noses at the ironically provincial coastal types with their caricatures of every other American region, not least of which is the South. Louisville boasts the arguable cradle of math rock (Slint), an outpost of alt.country (Freakwater) and the throne of gothic indie folk with Palace and Will Oldham's other projects (such as Bonnie Prince Billy). These bands are revered by a global cognescenti. And now there's the fabulously textured compositions of My Morning Jacket. They feature songs that build in tempo and volume, over well-wrought-lyrics and wailing vocal crescendoes, occasionally rocking out with a rumor of twangy country guitar. Easily one of my favourite bands these days. JH
Si My Morning Jacket s'est affirmé depuis quelque temps déjà (plus précisément le séminal At Dawn en 2001) comme l'un des groupes américains actuels les plus passionnants, ses albums précédents étaient parfois passés relativement inaperçus. Ce nouvel opus, baptisé de la lettre 'Z', est plus dignement salué par la critique. Pourtant, dès le morceau d'ouverture, 'Wordless Chorus', il n'a pas le charme de l'album précédent, It Still Moves (2003), sur lequel planait une atmosphère dream-pop bien inspirée - celle que l'on retrouve de Galaxie 500 à The Clientele. La production de John Leckie, ambitieuse mais cassant toute velléité lo-fi, y est peut-être pour quelque chose. Mais c'est sans doute le départ du claviériste Danny Cash et, surtout, de l'excellent guitariste Johnny Quaid, qui se fait durement ressentir. Qu'on se rassure pourtant, les tonnes de réverbe sur la voix n'ont pas disparu !
MY BLOODY VALENTINE
This beautifully noisy and highly influential act was as name-droppable as Pavement and Sonic Youth in indie rock circles of the 90s. Do they hold up? Have they reached their Zenith or should they rename the club Nadir? Only one way to find out. What a shame that it overlaps with another great 'My' band previewed just above. JH
Les inventeurs de la noisy pop n'ont eu de cesse de faire espérer la sortie d'un nouvel album. Après plus de 10 ans d'inactivité, My Bloody Valentine se reforme en 2007. Les chantres du shoegaze et de la noizy pop n'ont cependant pas dit leur dernier mot...
ELI PAPERBOY REED
Good lordy! Is this some 90-year-old Motown relic? Au contraire, the 24-year old ‘paperboy's' Martin-Gaye delivery is part of the retro-soul mouvement whose most visible icon has been Amy Winehouse. But that may be changing. The air is buzzing with talk about global music awards. What a treat to see EPR in such an intimate setting. JH
Le jeune crooner de Boston et ses True Loves viennent défendre leur nouvel opus, le bien nommé Roll With You. Une bonbonne vitale de gospel assez transpirant. Des morceaux up tempo qui donnent envie de shake shake shake, quelques titres aux arrangements parfaitment sirupeux, des ballades à faire pleurer... Tout cela est fait au premier degré par un passionné et ses musiciens habités et c'est ce qui compte.
CLAIRE DITERZI
In this day and age of readymix celebrity, Claire Diterzi is a different proposition altogether. Faced with her onstage, you would be forgiven for having entered into some kind of wonderful acid trip. Issued from a kaleidoscopic track record of having been in another group (Fourgette Mi Notte), plus dance, theatre and film projects, her music diffuses in a baroque, ethereal way. Put Kate Bush, Diamanda Galas and Björk onstage in a nunnery with the nuns providing the backing and you'll end up with something like these haunting madrigals. Her latest album Tableau de Chasse used as its muse a collection of famous sculptures and paintings using women as their subject. You get the feeling that it's art for art's sake chez Claire, making it all the more compelling. CG
Claire Diterzi a imaginé ‘Tableau de Chasse' comme un concert, avant tout et surtout. Mis en scène et en images par Alexis Armengol, il lui permet de réaliser deux rêves, mettre la peinture et la sculpture en musique et évoquer les différentes aventures artistiques (théâtre, danse, cinéma...) qu'elle a traversées depuis ses premiers pas sur scène avec Forguette mi note en 1986, à ce nouvel album, hymne à l'amour audacieux et sensuel, version ‘rock électro poétique'...
